Saint Mark's Syrian Orthodox Monastery in the Armenian quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem
Butrus Sowmy, librarian and monk, brought the initial attention to the American Schools of Oriental Research (ASOR). Sowmy had told them that the scrolls had been in the monastery for 40 years and were being catalogued with other rare books, but Syrian Archbishop Athanasius Samuel had actually purchased them the year prior, in 1947.
